Remove the old handle

Door handles are not only important for their aesthetic value to your home, but they're also essential for security as they let you lock and unlock your door. As time passes, the door handle may start to lose its grip or feel loose. It might be beginning to appear worn out and old. This is a sign that it's probably time to replace it.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is an issue because it means that you can not lock or unlock your door, which could pose an security risk to you and your family.

It's also an excellent idea to replace your door handle when it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be dangerous, particularly for elderly and children members who struggle to open it. They may get trapped. Luckily, it's quite easy to fix a broken door handle by simply replacing the handle that was broken.

Most modern door handles are standard size and so they are suitable for any door. If you're unsure if your new door handle will fit, try removing the old one and measuring the holes in its housing. This will enable you to purchase the right size door handle.

The most straightforward method to remove the handle from your door is to take it off of the door. Usually, a screwdriver is used. Some door handles come with the cover plate, which conceals the mounting screws. It is necessary to remove the cover plate to gain access to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, make a note of how the spindle is attached so that you can make sure it is aligned when you put in your new one.

You can also remove the door handle by removing it from the latch mechanism. This is usually done with an screwdriver however you'll need to find the small latch, which is located at the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, you can remove the handle from the strike plate, and then the latch from the door edge.

Removal of the Strike Plate

You'll need to replace your latch plate when replacing the handle. It's the plate that holds the hole through which the latch for the door is inserted when the door is closed. The new handles will come with two latch plates that are circular and rectangular plate (see the image above which shows the various parts of a door handle). If your current latch plate has rectangular in shape, swap it over to the round one so that the latch hooks onto the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle easier to use.

The first step is to unscrew the screw that is holding the latch plate that was previously in place. These screws can be quite tight, and will require some force to loosen. It might be beneficial to get a second person to assist with this part if possible.

After the screws are removed, the latch plate should slide out of the door easily. If it is stuck or doesn't move then use a small nail file to scratch around the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes free up the plate.

Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. With the wood screws that came with the new handles, attach the latch plate to the inside of the doorjamb. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this could damage the strike plate.

If you are not sure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, shut and then open the door to see whether it locks and closes properly. If not then you'll need to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down, forward or back until the door closes correctly.

If the door is still moving or jiggles, you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more frequent on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too narrow, the wrong size latch or a damaged strike plate. If this is the situation then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Removal of the Latch

The latch is the angled piece of metal that slides through the hole that runs along the inside edge of your door. The latch is pushed forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into the door's frame so that the door stays closed. If your door is wiggles when you close it, changing the latch might be all that's needed to correct the issue.

It's difficult to see the screws that secure the latch to the door, however there's usually a small hole on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver into the slot and pry it off. After removal of the trim plate you should be able to remove the latch as well as the bolts that hold it, as well as the spindle.

If the latch is not easily removed then use a paperclip tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Place the item into the slot for the latch that is recessed, and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel that the latch and handle begin to split. You may need to repeat this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to let it out.

It should be possible to slide the new latch into its slot with no issues once you have removed the old one. Make sure the latch is correctly positioned in the slot and lined up with the screw chambers, and then use the new screws to attach it to the strike plate and door frame.

Before installing the new handle, make certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the big hole on the front of the door to the edge). You should also check whether the size of the latch on the new handle matches this measurement.

If you're replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged then you will need a new one. If you're not changing locks the new latch will fit into your existing recess, and work just fine with your current keys. Be sure to select the latch with rectangular cover plates that match your old handles.

If yours does not allow for a handle, you'll have to drill a hole into the door. The procedure to do this is the same procedure for opening a door with locks, but you'll need to take extra care not to harm the door or frame.
